Heterodon (лат), неядовитое пресмыкающееся с коротким и толстым телом и широкой головой, заостряющейся и вздернутой кверху, что позволяет ей выкапывать корм из земли. Проявляет своеобразную защитную реакцию: вначале пытается испугать агрессора, маскируясь под ядовитую гремучую змею, потом, в случае неудачи, переворачивается брюхом вверх и притворяется мертвой.
